SOME ENGLISH WORDS THAT CANNOT BE TRANSLATED

Awkward

It is one of the most common adjectives in everyday speech. It could be translated as "embarrassing" or "uncomfortable", is our way of describing something different from the custom. Usually, if something is Awkward, we have no idea how to react.

Example: Being in the room with my ex-wife sure was Awkward.

Brunch

It is a colloquial word to indicate the meal that is consumed between breakfast and lunch. Brunch is now an international word and custom, it takes place around 11:00 in the morning and occasionally presents a mid-morning cocktail, usually a mimosa or something equally light.

Example: I’m having brunch with my brother tomorrow at 11:30 at that new waffle restaurant.

Fluffy

In English there are words to indicate something hairy and words that instead describe something soft, but fluffy is the adjective that encloses both in English.

Example: My persian cat is so fluffy!

Hater

A slang term that refers to a jealous and aggressive or rude person; it is often used to joke between friends... and especially on social media!

Example: Don’t be a hater. You know I look cool right now.

Wanderlust

It is a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about.

Example: Wanderlust has led him to many different parts of the world.

Sketchy

In English, the word "suspect" refers to a person acting strangely, giving the viewer or listener a sense of foreboding. In English we have sketcht, which is more informal and describes not only something that is suspicious, but also something not fully defined. One sketchy person is suspicious; a sketchy project or artwork is still underway and not fully realized!

Example: Ah, this painting is a bit Sketchy at the moment but it’s coming together.

Watch out for that guy over there. He seems Sketchy.

Chill

This word in English is an adjective, a noun and a verb. As an adjective, it describes a person calm and undisturbed by most things; as a noun it refers to the cold literally: it can make us think of December; as a verb it represents instead the relaxed way with which we spend time with others.

Example: Man, your parents are so chill.

The Autumn chill was oppressive.

We really should chill together sometime.

As far as I'm concerned, I love the word "wanderlust" because it is related to travels and I miss them a lot.
