Taylor Alison Swift is a multi-Grammy award-winning American singer/songwriter who, in 2010 at the age of 20, became the youngest artist in history to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Throughout these years she has written tons of songs.
Here are some more idioms from her songs:
1. In your wildest dream
If you say something will happen ‘in your wildest dreams’, it means that it isn’t likely to happen or you think it is impossible to happen.
“Staring at the sunset, babe. Red lips and rosy cheeks. Say you’ll see me again. Even if it’s just in your wildest dream.” from the song “Wildest Dreams”
Example: I want Taylor Swift to come to my graduation day and sing for me, but I think it probably won’t happen, even in my wildest dreams.
2. Last straw
The last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset, angry, etc.
“You don’t have to call anymore, I won’t pick up the phone, This is the last straw, Don’t wanna hurt anymore.” from the song “You’re Not Sorry”
Example: It had been a difficult week, so when the car broke down, it was the last straw.
3. Sweep (someone) off (someone’s) feet.
This expression describes the feeling when you fall in love instantly with someone.
“I’m not a princess, This ain’t a fairytale, I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet, Lead her up the stairwell” from the song “White Horse”.
Example: She hopes a gorgeous man will sweep her off her feet on Valentine’s Day.
4. To know something like the back of your hand.
This expression is used when talking about things/places/persons you know really well.
“And we know it’s never simple. Never easy. Never a clean break. No one here to save me. You’re the only thing I know like the back of my hand” from the song “Breathe”.
Example: I know my best friend like the back of my hand.
5. To wear your heart on your sleeve.
It means that you show your feelings obviously.
“Got the radio on, my old blue jeans. And I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve. Feeling lucky today, got the sunshine. Could you tell me what more do I need.” from the song “ A Place In This World”.
Example: When I hang out with my girlfriend, I usually wear my heart on my sleeve.
8. Go down in flames
Meaning: to fail or end suddenly and completely.
“So, it’s gonna be forever, or it’s gonna go down in flames.” from the song “Blank space”.
Example: Her marriage goes down in flames after the big fight between her and her husband.
Hey, I found this post amazing and really interesting, because Taylor Swift is one of my favorite singers and I always listen to these songs🥰!
